Engineer Associate

The primary purpose of the Engineer Associate is to assist project managers in developing and processing design projects by performing due diligence, engineering calculations and design, and technical writing. This position prepares preliminary information, prepares and obtains required documents and plans, ensures internal approval of products and plans, processes plans for approval by reviewing agencies, and provides technical assistance during the construction phases.

The Engineer Associate has responsibility for preparation and coordination of technical activities on assigned projects. The Engineer Associate assists in the preparation of plans and schedules, conducts and coordinates assigned engineering work, monitors work for compliance to applicable codes and accepted engineering practices and standards, and ensures effective communication and coordination on assigned projects between other project participants, including architects, engineers, developers, contractors, and clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs due diligence and research on projects as required to provide the background information to start a new project.
  • Assists with the preparation of plans and reports for relevant project design elements under the guidance and supervision of a licensed professional engineer. Also receives direction from more experienced Engineer Associates.
  • Performs engineering design tasks on assigned projects under supervision of Project Engineer or Project Manager, including engineering drawings, engineering reports and required applications to regulatory agencies.
  • Assists in preparing water modeling. Facilitates permitting processes with the project manager reviewing the final submittal.
  • Develops skills utilizing relevant software programs to assist with preparation of simple exhibits to complex working drawings as directed by a Project Engineer or Project Manager.
  • As appropriate, requests assistance from CAD Operators, CAD Designers and Engineering Technicians to develop working drawings.
  • Recognizes when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions.
  • Communicates task status effectively to Project Engineer/Project Manager.
  • Coordinates with other members of the design team to finalize the design of the development.
  • Coordinates with the regulatory review agencies to resolve comments on construction documents or plans/permits to seek final approval.
  • Works within defined project scopes, budgets and schedules.
  • Has responsibility to plan and coordinate specific tasks on various projects.
  • Assists in client contact and communication pertaining to specific projects.
  • Stays up to date on regulatory changes.
  • Begins developing working relationships with regulatory officials.
  • Reviews electronic invoicing and/or project budget reports.
  • Reviews own work for accuracy and coordinates with others to ensure QA/QC of engineering deliverables.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
  • 3-5 years of relevant project design, working towards becoming a licensed professional engineer.

Skills and Special Requirements/Licensing:

  • EIT registration preferred.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, as well as relevant software programs which may include AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, StormCAD, WaterCAD, SewerCAD, Microstation, and other water-based modeling software.
  • Relevant project design elements include grading, drainage, utilities, and roadways.
  • Understanding of codes, legal and design requirements in Austin and surrounding areas preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking, email etiquette, grammar, and networking.
  • Developing ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies.
  • Developing cooperative skills in working efficiently with a team.
  • Takes initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the design team, and obtaining necessary information.
  • Developing strong organizational skills and understanding of task assignment and schedule. Basic understanding of budgeting and efficient use of time and resources.

Professional Engineer

Position Overview:
This position is for the individual licensed as a Professional Engineer who performs work involving the application of all conventional aspects of engineering work and takes an increasingly responsible role in the execution of projects.

The Project Engineer has responsibility for preparation and coordination of technical activities on assigned projects. The Project Engineer plans, schedules, conducts and coordinates assigned engineering work, monitors work for compliance to applicable codes and accepted engineering practices and standards, and ensures effective communication and coordination on assigned projects between other project participants, including architects, engineers, developers, contractors, and clients. As a licensed professional engineer, has the authority to seal engineering documents for work performed under their supervision and takes full professional responsibility for that work.

A Project Engineer should act as an “Assistant Project Manager”, well-versed in project design, financials, and schedules. They are the point of contact for clients in the event that the Project Manager is unavailable A Project Engineer must be able to coordinate with staff at all levels, both internal and external to the company. Assists in project decisions including scheduling deadlines, workload planning, budgets, and change orders.
Essential Functions:
Responsibilities will include but not limited to the following:
• Manages due diligence on potential projects.
• Responsible for planning, scheduling, conducting and coordinating the technical aspects of assigned projects.
• Prepares plans and reports for project design elements.
• Prepares monthly project status reports and change orders.
• Responsible for budget monitoring and trend tracking.
• Coordinates project approvals with review entities.
• Coordinates and checks engineering deliverables (QA/QC).
• Has increasing accountability for the successful completion of engineering projects.
• Supervises, coordinates and/or reviews the work of other professionals who assist in specific assignments.
• Mentors less experienced staff in developing technical skills; specifically as it relates to design elements within construction documents.
• Communicates and reports effectively with Project Manager.
• Communicates effectively with clients to resolve technical project issues, present and explain reports and designs, and provide service to meet client’s goals.
• Has responsibility to plan, coordinate and direct one or more small projects or a large complex project.
• Effectively communicates with contractors to implement plan design; Reviews and responds to construction related RFIs and submittals.
• Prepares proposals and change orders up to the limits set by the company.
• Approves basic expenditures and petty cash requests up to limits set by the company.
• Recommends fee amounts to Project Manager for change orders and other amendments to a project proposal.
• Reviews invoices under guidance of Project Manager.
• Authority to sign and seal on design/plans. Provide final approval of construction documents and other deliverables prior to submittal.
• Signature authority of minor project forms for agencies and RFIs, upon review by a supervisor. Review and make recommendations to construction submittals for signature by Project Manager.
• May have 1-4 staff members reporting to them including Engineer Associates and CAD staff.
• While on project, the Project Engineer reports to the Project Manager, who has ultimate responsibility for both the quality and effective execution of project assignments.
• May provide input and recommendation on policies, procedures, performance and project issues, but final authority is assigned to the Project Manager.

Education/Experience:
• Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in relevant field.
• Has 7+ years engineering experience in site civil/land development engineering
• Licensed PE.

Skills and Special Requirements/ Licensing:
• Licensed Professional Engineer. Comprehensive understanding of all relevant areas of design and various design methods.

Project Manager

Position Overview:
The Project Manager is the primary person on each team responsible for management, preparation and coordination of all technical and financial activities on assigned projects. The Project Manager plans, schedules, conducts and coordinates assigned engineering work, monitors work for compliance to applicable codes and accepted engineering practices and standards, and ensures that all assigned personnel are coordinating their activities with other project participants and that the requirements of the Contract are being satisfied. This person is expected to have significant technical knowledge and awareness to be able to recognize when technical problems are developing and to initiate appropriate corrective actions.

The Project Manager is the primary representative for Client and jurisdictional agency personnel, and coordination of internal activities.

The Project Manager manages multiple projects and staff on client delivery and technical aspects of a project from start to finish, from proposal and due diligence to project acceptance. He or she is the main point of contact with clients and responsible for the development of team members reporting to them. The Project Manager must be talented in leading a team and coordinating with multiple disciplines associated with project development.

Essential Functions:
Responsibilities will include but not limited to the following:
• Manages design projects. Responsible for planning, scheduling, conducting, and coordinating the technical aspects of projects.
• Coordinates the day-to-day operations of professional and technical staff assigned to projects by assigning, monitoring, and reviewing progress and accuracy of work, directing efforts, and providing technical guidance.

As a licensed professional engineer, has the authority to seal engineering documents prepared under their supervision and takes full professional responsibility for those designs.
• Signature authority of project forms for agencies, RFIs and construction submittals.
• Has responsibility and accountability for the quality, effective execution and financial success of projects under their direction.
• Makes decisions on team performance and project issues and implementation of policies and procedures.
• Communication is required with senior staff on significant items. Recommendations are provided on overall company policies and procedures to be reviewed by senior leadership.
• Typically has 2-6 employees reporting to them.
• Responsible for staff feedback and improvement discussions when necessary.
• Responsible for workload decisions as well as critical project decisions, including disputes.
• May make decisions or recommendations regarding employment decisions such as staff selection, hiring, pay, promotion, transfer, demotion or termination.
